The best scarf in the world, a diary by Peta Biggin
Celapene Press Commendation - Charlotte Duncan Award 2010

Monday, July 16.

This has been the best day of my life! It seems like it has taken forever, but Nanna has finally moved into her new room. She's come to live with us, forever! It's going to be awesome. Now, if I could just find away to get rid of David, my life would be perfect. Little brothers are SO annoying. Why do they even exist?

Thursday, July 19.

Today was the worst day of my life. Rachel Finnigan came to school wearing yet another new scarf. Everyone thought it was the best they'd ever seen. It was OK, I suppose. She just thinks she's so good. She wore it all day. I mean, what a show off! One day, I'm going to be the one with the best scarf in school. I can't stand her - I wish she'd move to the North Pole.

Saturday, July 21.

My nanna is the BEST! I told her about Rachel Finnigan with her new scarf and how she's a big show off. So, Nanna's going to help me make my own scarf - lucky for me she knows how to knit and she's going to teach me. Not only will I have a scarf ten times better, but I'm going to have made it myself. If that doesn't put Rachel in her place then nothing will. We're going to start tomorrow and I just know I'll be good at it. How hard can knitting really be?

Monday, July 23.

This knitting stuff is hard. I've had to start over four times because it keeps getting holey. Anyone would think I was making a fishing net instead of a scarf. It's all David's fault anyway. He keeps annoying me so I can't concentrate. He's just jealous. And stupid like Rachel Finnigan...begin again. LOL.

Monday, July 30.

Finally, I'm getting somewhere with my scarf. I've done thirty centimeters and I've already used nine different colours. It's going to be so good when it's finished. Rachel Finnigan is STILL wearing her scarf. She's such a show off but she doesn't know what's coming. I don't know how she has any friends at all. It's a pity that I have to work by myself, but Nanna has been sick.

Thursday, August 2.

Nanna's still sick. She hasn't been able to get out of bed for two days now. I'm not sure what's wrong with her but Mum's going to take her to the doctor if she doesn't get better soon. Lucky for me, I can knit really well without her. I knew I'd be good at this. Nanna says that if I keep at it I'll be finished in a few days. I've used thirty colours! It looks so good so far and it's longer than my arm. Everyone at school is going to be SO jealous. I can't wait!

Sunday, August 5.

Yay! My scarf is finished! It has sixty-seven colours and the longest fringes. I think it's the best scarf I've ever seen. I can't wait to see Rachel Finnigan's stupid ugly face tomorrow at school. When she sees my scarf she's going to pitch a fit. I bet she even chucks her old scarf in the bin! It's going to be GREAT!

Monday, August 6.

No school today. Nanna's in hospital.

Tuesday, August 7.

Nanna is still in hospital, so I didn't take my scarf to school. Somehow, it just didn't seem right.

Wednesday, August 8.

Today I made a big decision. I decided not to take my scarf to school. Instead, after school, I took it to the hospital and gave it to Nanna as a get well present. She said it was the best medicine she could hope for and I think Mum was crying (how embarrassing).

Friday, August 10.

Nanna was allowed to come back home today. At last. She was wearing her new scarf when I got home from school. It looked pretty good on her. Rachel Finnigan was still prancing around with her scarf. Well, she can go jump! I happen to know that my scarf is way better than hers. In fact, my scarf is the best in the world. The best Nanna in the world told me so.
